Brown Trout
On The Cumberland River
You will be hard pressed to find a better trout fishery in the southern states than the Cumberland River. The 100’s of thousands of gallons of icy cold water that is released from the Cumberland Reservoir every day keeps the tempertures at a perfect level for Browns & Rainbows, which is why the Kentucky state records for both species have come out of the Cumberland River, with the Brown trout record at 21 lbs and the record Rainbow is holding at 14lbs 6oz.. Catching trout on the fly is excellent in season, and out of season they can coaxed to bite a ShadRap on a spinning rod or live shad behind planing boards with level winds. Fly fishing can be guided both by wading or from my guide boat.
You might be asking yourself – why is Captain Johnny showing rainbows on a brown trout page. That is an easy answer. Sometimes we come across rainbows that are big enough to chase the baits we are throwing at the browns. When that happens they are usually respectable (sometimes downright HUGE), so although we don’t specifically target rainbow trout – they are a nice disctraction at times.
The best days always fill up quickly – give Captain Johnny Rush a call today to book your Cumberland River or Dale Hollow trip to catch a fish of a lifetime.
